Is there more than just a pretty design?

The Trym II makes an instant impression with it’s unique sleek style, this is the first clipper that we’ve seen designed like this. It’s great to see newer companies entering the industry and coming out with fresh designs, rather than repeating the standard industry products. The look is one of its main benefits with a very modern design that is far less intimidating than its competitors.

The reality is that a lot of shavers are very similar, there isn’t a lot of complexity to these products and therefore the main differences are; the design, the quality of the blade action and how long they actually last. That is what we’ll be examining in this review of the Trym ii, whilst also giving a breakdown and description of the product and the accessories that it comes with.

Trym II Review

What's inside the Trym II box?

When you first open the box you’ll notice that the clippers come with a very handy stand, it’s obvious that the design was crucial to the company and they’ve created a product that you’ll want to proudly leave on your bathroom sink. Unfortunately, the stand isn’t used to charge the clippers but this is to be expected at this price point. It would be nice for them to release a premium edition with a charging stand for those of us who are sick are cords in the bathroom.

Trym II Unboxing

The charging cable is a bulky traditional shaving charger, again it would have been nice if this could have been shrunk but at such a cheap price it’s hard to argue too much.

The body of the Trym ii is a sleek metal, combined with a solid plastic finish. Unlike the majority of shavers the on/off button is actually on the side of the product which gives it a much nicer appearance but could occasionally cause you to knock it off whilst you’re using it.

Blades and Design

As with any shaver or clipper, the most important thing for the majority of consumers is how it cuts hair. It’s unfair to compare these clippers to models which are 5x the price , but compared to similar priced clippers they do offer a great cutting action. They cut effortlessly through stubble, mustache and beard hair. For those of you with tougher hair, particularly afro, it might be slightly more difficult to cut through and very rarely you’ll have to go over the same spot multiple times. However, in general the blades are efficient and offer a reasonable cut with little issue.

It would be impossible to argue that these are some of the best clippers on the market , but they are great value for a personal user who will only be cutting their own hair and therefore will use them only semi-frequently.

We haven’t tested these clippers over a long period of time and therefore can’t personally comment on the longevity of them, but other reviews which we have read have been positive. It appears that they stay strong and sharp over multiple years and with professional-grade blades this is to be expected. Obviously, your own personal experience will be greatly affected by how you care for the blades.

What accessories do you get?

Another nice touch is the different length combs which come with the Trym ii, at 1.8mm, 3mm, 6mm and 9mm. This should give the average user enough options to satisfy their needs and get the look which they desire. As is the case with any trimmer at this price range, you can’t expect these combs to be made of a super-strong composite plastic . They are a little flimsy and I imagine that at some point they will break if used extensively over many years.

You’ll also get some free blade oil which you’ll be able to use to help maintain the blades and ensure that you can keep them rust-free and therefore increase its longevity. In a similar manner you’ll also kept a handy cleaning brush which is nice to have.

To note, the charger is designed only to run at 110 volts as it is in North America , so for those of you abroad you can use an adaptor (be careful with this) or look at another product.

How big is the Trym ii?

The Trym II itself is actually quite small, only 6.5 inches tall and weighing in at under a pound. This makes it a very comfortable fit in the hand and with a thin shape it’s easier to hold than many of the bulkier competitors. One unfortunate feature missing it a bezeled rubber grip on the sides which would have made it safer to use and more comfortable to hold, presumably this was not included because of the extra cost.

How big is the Trym 2?

However, it does have another benefit which is its one year warranty which is quite a bit more than the 6 month warranties which have become more common on electronics at this price range.

It can usually be found selling between $25 and $35 which for most customers is a very reasonable price for a trimmer, especially one that can rival clippers that sell for far more than this. Were we to recommend this product, it would be to those who only use their clippers once or twice weekly, who are not snobby about brands and likely as a birthday present. This makes an ideal gift because its appearance suggests a price that is far above what it actually sells for.

Having read multiple other reviews of the Trym ii, some users have complained that the battery has started to weaken or in some cases even fail after months of usage. While we can’t comment on this ourselves, it has been our experience with rechargeable electronics that many consumers leave products charging far after they are full and therefore can damage the batteries. If you do choose to buy the Trym ii then we would highly recommend that once it is completed charging that you remove the charger from the wall. This should help to prevent any issues and extend the life of the battery.

One final note before we conclude this Trym ii review is that it can only be used dry because it isn’t waterproof enough to be considered to be used as a wet shaver. This may turn some users off the product but for the majority of us we would only use the clippers dry anyway.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Trym ii is a steal at its current price point. No, it’s not the best pair of clippers that we’ve reviewed and it isn’t the cheapest either. But what it does offer is a middle-ground between quality and price that very few other products are able to reach. The most important factor of any shaver or clipper is the blades and these are able to effortlessly glide through hair in a way that some competitors are not. As well, it has the best design that we’ve seen on a pair of clippers and is one of the few that you’d be comfortable leaving out for visitors to see. Overall, the Trym ii gets our seal of approval for those of you who are looking for a reasonable clipper at a fair price.
