The BaKblade was designed a few years back to help men who struggle with excessive back hair . It’s something that the younger-you would have laughed at, but age comes to us all and with that comes hair in places you never though it would be!

Design of the BaKblade

The blade itself is very large at over 4” wide, giving you plenty of surface area to make efficient work of your whole back. No shaving cream is required because the comb prevents skin-blade contact to an extent, instead, you’ll feel the comb against your skin like a back scratcher.
Using the BaKblade is very simple, you just have to drag it very lightly across your back and rinse periodically. It would be useful to have a mirror to shave in, but it’s not essential. How to use the BaKblade
You should start with your upper back. You can do this by holding the BaKblade so that the blade is facing you, then reach over your shoulder, putting the blade as low down your back as possible. Then you can pull the blade upwards in one long motion, rinse and repeat. When you want to shave your lower back and sides you can simply reach down to your side to shave it horizontally.
One alternative that some men have considered is an electric clipper version. One of the problems with a clipper is that if it goes wrong there is likely to be far more damaged caused and since you can’t see what you’re doing it’s best to have a safer blade.
The blades are an interesting design, it’s essentially just 3 or 4 standard double-edged safety blades combined together across one large piece of plastic. Unfortunately, you can’t just undo the casing and replace the blades with standard blades. They make you buy their own replacement sections which are far more expensive. This is the biggest downside because the cost can add up. Each blade should last you about two months and a single blade can be bought for around $4. This means that this razor will cost you around $2 per month in new blades.
Although the product claims that it can be used without any shaving cream, this is only true when the hair on your back is already quite short. We would recommend that the first time you use the BaKblade you should use a lot of shaving cream. This will also help to reduce the chance of cuts as you learn the new technique. Once your back hair is shorter you can easily maintain is using the BaKblade without any shaving cream.
The company that creates this product is looking to create a 2.0 version in 2017 and this is designed with a more ergonomic and flexible handle that will make using the blade far easier. However, this 1.0 version is more than enough for the large majority of men.
One recommendation that we read from a man that had used the BaKblade was to use a side-to-side technique where possible rather than a vertical motion. This is likely to work better because it’s easier to ensure that there is sufficient pressure on the blades to cut your hair.
As with any razor, we would recommend that you take your time and be patient. This is a technique that you’re not going to be used to and you can only see so much even if you’re using a mirror. We’ve seen some complaints and pictures of men who have cut their backs using this blade, so make sure to be careful. Overall, this is a great product for any man who has deal with the embarrassment of back hair. It’s a tough issue - you either have to deal with or ask somebody to shave it for you. The BaKblade fills a gap in the market and it does it relatively well. There are some downsides, the replacement blades are more expensive than you would think and you might get a few scratches.
